First of all, Welcome to the South Texas Amateur Radio Club web site. This page will help answer some questions about amateur radio in general and what is available in the local area. One of the best sites describing Amateur Radio is on the ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio, web site. This will answer many of your questions about the multi-faceted hobby that we participate in. If the information on the ARRL web site interests you, the first thing to do is get in contact with a local club. In Corpus Christi, that would be STARC. You can contact us by email at n0wzh@stx.rr.com or ad5ca@arrl.net. If you want to speak with someone, you can call Steve at 361-815-7461. Next would be to get some training material for the Technician class license. We normally have these available locally, but you can also order them off the internet. Information on training material can be found on our Testing & Training web page. We encourage everyone to get the "Now You're Talking" book from the ARRL. Normally, during the spring, we have a Technician class. You can check the Calendar to see if one is currently scheduled. If one is not listed and your are interested in attending, let us know. We might have enough to set on up. Once you have studied the material some, you can access some practice exams via the internet if you want. Information on these is also available on our Testing & Training page. (This is a great way to know what you might need to study a little bit more before taking the test.) Now it is time for the test. STARC holds quarterly testing sessions for the Coastal Bend area. The schedule is availabe on the Calendar and the Testing & Training pages. We normally schedule an additional testing session just after the Technician class and also during the local Ham radio convention. Again, check the above site for the schedule. You are also welcome to come to any of the club events. We will introduce you to some of the local Hams and try to answer your questions. Ham radio is a fun and exciting hobby with many ways to participate. We at STARC are here to help in any way that we can. Just get in touch with us. |
