Dec. 3 & 4
Skywarn Recognition Day
Special Event

Skywarn Recognition Day is an annual event, usually held the first Friday & Saturday of December.  The Corpus Christi National Weather Service office again hosted the local ham radio operators for this special event.

We started off about 3:30pm with the installation of a 2nd HF antenna.  The antenna was an inverted V with wires for 80m and 40m.  Pictures of the installation can be seen below.  Steve, W2MY, provided the antenna and pushup pole.  Steve, N0WZH provided the coax to into the NWS conference room.

The band conditions were tough, most of our contacts were either on IRLP or on PSK31.  In talking with another station on IRLP, they commented that they were experiencing the same.  It will be interesting to see how the other stations have done.

We started operating at 6pm on Friday.  Steve, N0WZH, stayed until about 9:30pm, and Larry, W5LDB, stayed until about 10:45pm.

On Saturday morning, we gathered again between 7:30am and 8am to start the process all over again.

Thanks to the NWS staff for the excellent lunch.  The grilled burgers and hot dogs are always good and the chocolate cake with great.  Lunch was server about 11:30am for the 19 ham radio operators present.

Soon after everyone got their fill of food, Jason, NWS forecaster and soon to be ham radio operator, gave a great presentation.  This was followed by Matt, WX4MAT, giving a presentation on GRlevelX, a radar program for Windows and show some of the configurations that can be made with the software.

Once the presentations were completed, we spent a couple of more hours trying to make some contacts, but eventually closed up shop about 3pm.
