May 16, 2009 The 34th running of the Beach to Bay Relay marathon was held on May 16, 2009, Armed Forces Day. The Relay is sponsored by Corpus Christi Roadrunners. Local hams have a long history of providing communications for the event along the route. Most hams are paired with a medical team at the exchange points. The nurses do what they do best, taking care of the physical needs of the runners, and the hams do what they do best, communicate in adverse conditions. Typical communications include sharing when the race starts along the route, when the first and last running go through a particular exchange point, and requesting needs of the medical teams to the race officials. These requests might include calling for an ambulance, requesting supplies like Ice, or trying to locate a location of a missing runner. The weather conditions this year were better than normal. We temperatures were warm but not too hot, but the humidity was giving the runners a hard time. It was very muggy this year. Larry, W5LDB, did a great job again coordinating the radio operators and serving as net control for the event. He also had a great crew of hams to work with. Some were old timers to the event, and some were first timers. Everyone performed well and the medical/event staff at my location was appreciative of us being there. When Holly, KE5EOM, and I left out designated exchange point, we told the staff we would see them next year. Below is the list of operators that volunteered for the event. I've also included some pictures from the 2 to 3 handoff at the Inter-Coastal bridge. Steve, NØWZH
