Dear Elmer,
What is a fox hunt?
Thanks, just-wondering
Dear Just-Wondering,
Another name for a fox hunt is radio direction finding. The goal is to
locate a hidden transmitter placed in an area that is accessible to the
public. The equipment used can go from the simple (an HT or scanner with a
simple antenna) to the elaborate (a radio with a directional antenna,
attenuators for when you get close to the transmitter to knock down the signal
strength, or even special antennas with electronics that will tell you which
direction the signal is coming from.)
You might also ask why. Transmitters can get keyed unintentionally
(somebody puts a microphone in the seat and then sits on it, etc.) or
intentionally to cause interference. We use fox hunts to practice the
skill of tracking these transmitters down. Thanks for the
question. Hope you try a fox hunt the next time the club sponsors
one. 73, Elmer
